1998 Youth Banner Project

In October, 1998 – there was the International Youth Project addressing the problems and concerning about the clear-cut logging (destruction) of the Great Bear Rainforest.  There were youth representing 9 countries; Canada, United States, England, France, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, and Finland.
They all came to the Court House of the Supreme Court of British Columbia where the “Ista” defenders and arrestees were on trial for stopping the logging operations and protecting the valley of  “Ista.”   There was to much international attention placed on this trial that they postponed it to February, 1999.

Chief Snuxyaltwa along with his nephew, Peter and his son, Keith watch the International youth and the Nuxalk mount the banners for display in the clear-cut.  They say it is so great to see all this support and help for the Nuxalk and the Great Bear Rainforest.

The Nuxalk are very thankful to all the youth, guides, organizers, people, and parents that were involved from all the countries.  It is hoped that a gathering can be arranged for a reunion of all these people to show continuous support for the Nuxalk and the Great Bear Rainforest.

The International youth of the Banner Project accompany the Nuxalk at a clearcut logging site at the Nusatsum valley 20 miles east of Bella Coola.  The youth and the Nuxalk displayed all the banners that were made and painted with images to support the Great Bear Rainforest and the Nuxalk.
